West Coast District Municipality in partnership with the Western Cape Department of Social Development and Government Communications and Information Systems launched a Gender Based Violence Referral Pathway booklet with the objective of sharing information with those affected by GBV.
According to Melonice Blanckenberg, Manager for Social Development at WCDM, the need for this booklet originated after discussions at the West Coast’s Social Development Coordinating Forum, a forum which creates synergy between communities and government in relation to social development. “ Although the support structures for those affected by GBV do exist it was identified that although victims might know where to report the incidence, they are not always aware of what to expect after reporting which leads in many a times to not reporting at all” said Melonice.
The launch of the booklet is part of WCDM’s 365-Day campaign to stop gender-based violence in communities. The Executive Mayor at West Coast District Municipality, Alderman Boffie Strydom, emphasized the importance of fostering partnerships when dealing with social challenges. “ The Council of West Coast District Municipality adopted a Community Safety Plan which aims to create safer and more sustainable communities, but we cannot do this alone. As the district municipality we are committed in joining your various projects and making our resources available to assist you in your goal to reduce violence” said the Executive Mayor to the various stakeholders in attendance. The National Prosecuting Authority did a presentation on the services and support mechanisms of the NPA and an overview of legislation pertaining GBV was given by Advocate Henley Sass.
Various gender-based violence awareness projects and community interventions will take place throughout the year where the booklets will be distributed to communities. Organizations who want to partner with the municipality to create awareness about Gender Based Violence can contact the municipality by sending an email to info@wcdm.co.za or call 022 433 8400.
