Quarter Circles:
Represents the different production sectors within the jurisdiction of the West Coast District Municipality, namely;

Wheat:  Refers to the wheat industry
Vineyard:  Refers to the vine-growing region and the wine industry
Seagull:  Refers to the coast line and the fishing industry
Flower:  Refers to the nature on which we are dependent and the unique beauty of the West Coast Nature
Cog-Wheel: Refers to the complex industrial component

In coherence, it refers to the balance which should be maintained between economic development, social development and the preservation of the environments integrity.

History and Establishment of West Coast District Municipality

The West Coast District Council was the legal successor of the disestablished West Coast Regional Services Council and was established in terms of Proclamation notice 152/1995 on 05 December 1995 and consisted of 50 councillors.

6 December 2000

The West Coast District Council amalgamated with the District Management  Areas (Rietpoort Transitional Council, Bitterfontein/Nuwerus Transitional Council) = West Coast District Municipality.

Establishment and name

With effect ("effective date means commencement date of the general election of Municipal Councils") the name of the municipality

"DMA" means the area of the former District Management Area (WCDMA1) which has been incorporated into the superseding local municipalities as set out in section 2(2)(c) of the Schedule to the principal Notice 480/200.  The municipal Council of the District Municipality has 24 (twenty-four) councilors., as determined by the Provincial Minister in Provincial Notice 261/2009 published in Provincial gazette Extraordinary No. 6646 dated 31 July 2009

The West coast District covers approximately 31 100 km² and has a population of approximately 455 881 according to the Western Cape Socio Economic Profile 2019.  The West Coast District area consists of the following five local municipalities namely: Saldanha Bay Municipality, Swartland Municipality, Bergrivier Municipality, Cederberg Municipality and Matzikama Municipality.  The distance along the N7 road from the northern boundary just north of Bitterfontein, to the southern boundary, just south of Malmesbury, west distance ranges from 80km to 110km.  The Atlantic Coastline (±350 km) is the western boundary while the eastern district boundary is defined by mountain ranges (Cederberg, Winterhoek & Koue Bokkeveld mountains). A unique characteristic of the study area is that all five of the local municipalities include portions of coast line area along the Atlantic Ocean to the west.
